Syds Run 2024

Syds Run is an annual moped-scooter-stepthru-clipon run and has been going since 1995.

Initially it was a pedal powered moped run, held on the closest Saturday to November 24 remembering Syd Falconer.

He ran the event for nearly 20 years and after he passed away, his son Keith continued to run it for several more years.

Aaron Card eventually took it on and his take on the run was “the run is for anyone riding small bikes, but he doesn’t mind if you turn up on a Harley and join in. Ride it slow and have a good time; that’s all that matters. It’s not at all about speed but rather the people, the mates, the camaraderie, and hanging out together.”

Sadly, Aaron passed away in 2023 with Ben Lappage stepping up, to host this growing small bike event.

This year they are raffling a Skyteam Skymax bike, with all proceeds going to charity.

The charity being supported this year is Leukemia & Blood Cancer NZ, and donations are accepted here: https://lbc-community-fundraising.raisely.com/clare-coe

There were nearly 600 riders at this year’s event, and it was easily, the biggest group of small bike riders in New Zealand.

The ride out from the St Margaret hospital car park to the Thompson Skatepark in New Brighton, was very busy but fun.

I didn’t see a lot of breakdowns and the riding was generally courteous and safe.

Family commitments meant I had to finish the ride there, however, there was a ride on the next day with the Canscoot ones, out around the bays.

This was another enjoyable trip to catch up with some scooter mates and family – done.
