2009 Events

MAY 30th – 31st

29th Brass Monkey RallyRally Web Site

The Rally is one of the last great motorcycling adventures in New Zealand. The Rally is always held over Queens Birthday weekend at Oturehua. Oturehua is in the heartland of Central Otago.

The reason this site was chosen was because of the climate extremes. The site is as close as we could get to Ophir, which holds the record for both cold and heat for New Zealand.

It can get as cold as Minus 10 deg C to Minus 20 deg C. Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, hence the name.

While we cannot guarantee it, it does snow quite often over the weekend. this makes the challenge even greater. The other reason for this location is the help we get from the Oturehua Winter Sports club people. They provide the food for the rally.
Because of the cold you must be prepared. Warm clothing, sleeping bag and approprate tent. Remember liquids can freeze including fuel in your petrol lines and especially water in the radiator. Ensure you have anti-freeze if you don’t want a split radiator.

AUGUST 22nd

Mods and Rockers Winter Rumble

On the 22nd of August 2009 we’re planning a Mods and Rockers run from Christchurch city to New Brighton for scooter owners riding classic style and vintage scooters and motorcyclists riding classic style and 1960 – 1970s era British motorcycles. Once at Brighton we will engage in a series of (non-violent) contests such as a quiz or a tug of war and the winning group (either Mods on scooters or Rockers on bikes) will be presented with a trophy, and that group will lead the ride back to Christchurch with the vanquished foes following.

Once back in Christchurch the groups will meet at Poplar lane where local bars The Vespa Room and The Twisted Hop will welcome us with hard liquor, food and entertainment – they’re planning to have their staff dressed as mods or rockers and will screen Quadraphenia on the big screens in both bars. If the Mods win the trophy will be placed behind the bar of The Vespa Room and if the Rockers win it will be placed behind the bar of The Twisted Hop. There will also be a contest for the best scooter and best bike and for best dressed mod and best dressed rocker. Secure storage is available for motorcycles and scooters allowing participants to celebrate and enjoy the event without worrying about drinking and riding.

We want as many people on classic style and period scooters as possible and if you can spread the word around your network that would be awesome.
Sorry no twist and go`s and must dress as a mod so dig out those old parka`s!!!

Mods and Rockers Winter Rumble update

It’s now less than 4 weeks before the titanic clash between the mods and rockers, and things are hotting up. We’re all excited about seeing the streets of Christchurch fill with Nortons, Triumphs, BSAs and other classic British bikes as well as café racer customs and classic scooters, and seeing what people have done to their machines. The bar Goodbye Blue Monday has joined the good guys at The Twisted Hop and The Vespa Room and will be playing some good old rockabilly music for the rockers, and a DJ will be serenading the mods with plenty of the music popular with the mod scene in the UK in the 1960s.

We are working to keep the website www.streetandsport.co.nz up to date, and suggest that you check that out for any info needed. We’ve also shifted the Rumble to the back of Street and Sport because it looks like numbers will be higher than expected and it’ll be easier to run the event there than in Brighton.
Registration:
It has been decided to use this event to support the NZ Spinal Trust and all entrants will be required to pay a $20.00 pre-registration if they register before August 15th. Early registrations will go in the draw to win a $450.00 crash helmet and get a free limited edition patch. If you register after the 15th, it will cost you $30.00 and you miss out on the helmet draw and may miss out on the patch.
Registration forms are available at Street and Sport Motorcycles, at the participating bars or online at  www.streetandsport.co.nz.
T Shirts:
We’re planning to make T shirts available in Mods and Rockers styles for $35.00 each. Profits from the sale of these shirts go to the NZ Spinal Trust.
Please contact David Thompson on rat@streetandsport.co.nz or ph 03 3662201 to order yours.
The timetable:
11.00 AM – 12.30 pm. Meet behind Street and Sport for a BBQ lunch put on by the Ulysses boys.
12.30 pm – 2.30 pm: The battle will commence with a tug of war, slow riding contests, a quiz with a difference, target practice and other games calling for skill, strength and skullduggery.
2.30 – 4.30 pm: We’ll ride through the Lyttleton tunnel, across to Sumner, then to Brighton where we’ll have a group photo by the pier. Then we ride back to Poplar Lane where we’ll regroup for a bit of a party at The Twisted Hop, the Vespa Room and Goodbye Blue Mondays.
Eligible bikes and scooters:
1. All 1960s vintage scooters and British and Euro bikes
2. Classic and retro styled modern bikes such as the Kawasaki W650,Triumph Bonneville, Vespa PX range etc
3. Custom built café racers of any origin and vintage.
Support vehicles:
We will have a van and a bike trailer, plus hopefully a light truck, so if your machine breaks down you will be collected. All participants are expected to turn up with a full tank, so running out of gas will not get you a ride home because we’d rather keep the trailer space for genuine breakdowns.
Volunteers:
We need volunteers to help on the day with managing the Rumble, following in support vehicles and helping with parking and traffic management at Poplar Lane.
Rules:
Please note that we will be travelling on public roads and therefore all participating vehicles must have a current WOF (if applicable) and be registered on the day of the run. All riders must hold a current license appropriate to the class of machine they’re riding and must obey all road rules. The roads will not be closed and running red lights etc in order to stay with the group will not be tolerated and anyone doing this will be asked to leave the run. We will stop regularly to allow stragglers to catch up.
This is a fun event and not a race. Stick with your group and nobody will be permitted to overtake the group leader (identified on the day). Treat other riders with respect regardless of what they ride (good natured ribbing permitted).

Any enquiries and any information please contact David Thompson on 03 3662201, rat@streetandsport.co.nz or visit Street and Sport Motorcycles at 63
Manchester St, Christchurch.
