Brass Monkey 2021

40 years on and the “last” one is finally done.

Phillip, a local scooterist, has done 39 of them. A pretty good effort, all things considered and on all sorts of bikes, but this one, on a Vespa PX200.

The last time I was here, there was snow on the ground and the rally really lived up to its name. Like all Rally’s most people are here to catch up with old friends, stand around burning drums and talk about stuff while drinking and just enjoying the atmosphere.

Chris moved south from Auckland and this was his first “Brass”. He rode his 1964 GS160 this year and after we did some last minute tuning, in the dark the night before, the bike performed very well. While not the fastest of scooters, it was good to see an older, original one out on the road and loaded for the rally.

One of our friends, Nathan, had done up a Honda CT90 and also rode up from Invercargill. He left earlier than we did and made good time for a “small” bike.

It was great to catch up with some of the Christchurch and Otago scooterists and a bit of a shame the “Brass” is done but like all good scooterists, we will just keep popping up at events and rides for as long as we can.
