1979 Honda XL500S – Tyres
The original tyres that came on the CBR600 rims, I have used for this project, were in poor condition. Once the bike was up and running enough to get a basic tune done, the old tyres were going to be replaced anyway. The rear tyre was huge compared with the front tyre and with different suspension this was exaggerated and made the bike look odd.
There is such a selection of road tyres available now that too much choice was a bit of a pain. I eventually went with a Shinko SR740 – SR741 Sports Tyre Set – 110/70-17 Front and 130/70-17 Rear. For around $250 delivered from Motozone they look good and work well.
While Shinko is a well known brand for scooter tyres, the price point and online reviews were good enough to take a punt on them. I had looked at some universal tyres but decided against any intentional off road riding.
A local scooter friend did a good job on getting them on the rims for me – thanks Phillip.
Now that the bike runs and handles better, there are only a few more things left to do before stripping it back down and getting some parts painted.
