So its now into a new year and we are a bit closer to the next Moto TT. From the last post I had done some re-cabling and purchased some bits and pieces from SIP for the Bajaj. The checklist from the last post was:

Working 12v LED indicators A working front brake switch A

It’s the change of season here in the deep south right now so one day you could be mowing your lawns in relative comfort and the next its howling a gale and wet. Today has been howling and wet, so after a couple of days in the shed once the jobs have been done has

Sante has come early in the Southern Scoot workshop with new parts for the Black Roughie and some other projects on the go. Hopefully, the Bajaj will be the next scoot to complete next years MotoTT (which most scooterists still call the Mille) and its time for some new bits and

The Bajaj has had quite a few additions as it has evolved from Barry the Bajaj into The Black Roughie. In effect the Bajaj has become the test bed for all things scooter and will continue to be “adjusted” as time permits. It has been a great learning tool as I

Its funny the things you learn as you pull your scooter to pieces and then put it back together again.

I am not a vespa expert by any means but have acquired a pretty good knowledge about scooter engines, wiring, exhausts, tyres, forks, wheels, carburetors, stands, bodywork, painting, seats and pretty

So the Bajaj had another stock 150 motor with the “sporty note exhaust system” and just needed rewired….

The newish motor started and went well but needed some more go as carting me around was OK but not very fast and the 8″ wheels at any speed are a little scary,

The Bajaj Super was a two-stroke 150 cc motor scooter produced in India by Bajaj Auto between 1976 and 2006.

Early models were a licensed reproduction of the Italian-made eight-inch-wheeled Vespa Super. Production continued even after the licence agreement with Vespa expired in 1977. In response, Vespa’s parent company Piaggio filed

So I got the shock mount sorted out, got it started and went for a ride. It ran very badly, not backfiring but reluctant to rev and just low on power. Also the new clutch needs adjusted and so do the gear cables.

Back to the shed and out with the

The journey continues….

So I got all the extra bits I needed installed and put humpty back together again, then added oil to the gearbox and fresh fuel in the tank.

Took it off the lift and onto the stand, gave it some choke and tried to start it. Nada….zip…….zilch……harumph.

Checked

Hmm.

The Bajaj has been left in the naughty corner for a bit after going “bang” the last time I tried to start it. I assumed the piston would have a hole in it but after opening the motor up, found it was fine. One thing I did notice was the

OK.

Still haven’t fixed the lights as Barry now has a fuel issue…

The motor now runs but the carburetor leaks and if you leave the fuel tap on it empties on the floor – BAD BAD Bajaj !!

Harumph!

So, now I have got a new needle and float and

So the new (reconditioned stator) does indeed run the bike as expected however this doesn’t help one iota with the lights.

I got the 12v Scoots RS kit because it came with a new wiring loom and an additional loom that included the ignition and key plus all the new bulbs

Finally it lives !!!

After giving up on the Scoot RS electronic kit, I got another flywheel and reconditioned stator from Bajaj Brookes aka Mr Skoot. I also found the HT lead had a broken tag at the spark plug connector end that went into the cable but it was still

The Bajaj has totally new wiring ordered as a complete CDI kit with an additional keyswitch and wiring loom from Scoots RS. Ive put the ignition switch just above the choke, however getting the loom up through to the horn, headlight and handlebar switch wasn’t so straight forward.

I have now pulled the motor out of the Bajaj to get the kick start shaft replaced. Finding some information on the scooter has been interesting to say the least, apparently the Indian manufacturer Bajaj made some scooters out of parts from various Italian model machines.

This explains why a lot of scooterists

Just had order confirmed from Scoots RS for new seat and bits and pieces for Janes Bajaj and the 42L2.

I know we all try to get S/H bits and bobs where we can and fix things up but sometimes its just cheaper to buy what you need new.

Finding parts for the 42L2 has been problematic at best so that project is on hold at the moment.

We recently got a bajaj 150 scooter off Trade me. It’s complete and runs well but has a couple of things that need fixed. It’s got potential and would be great for Jane
